Durable Medical Equipment


The primary objective of a durable medical equipment manufacturer is to link the ability to produce a product with the ability to manage medical insurance claims processing.  As with a conventional medical procedure environment (clinical or acute care), the linkage between providing medical services and claiming insurance payment, the DME must follow in a similar fashion.  Process an order (prescription) for a device, and tie it to a patient profile that will lead to payment.  The equipment (wheel chair, insulin pump, elevating bed, oxygen breathing apparatus, and the like) is just another provider ordered item (lab work, EKG, x-ray, pharmaceutical, and the like).

The challenge in a DME setting is to link a manufacturing system to a patient management system.  The Durable Medical Equipment (DME) module was surrounded by the full suite of Centricity modules, including Informatics.  At the core of the system is the TES module controlled by ETM.  A complete interface-based coupling of Centricity and SAP was designed, built, and deployed.

The process model is simple.  A number of orders (prescriptions) are received.  Manufacturing is advised of the requirement.  Equipment is manufactured.  Product is shipped.  Insurance payment is claimed.  Warranty and repair activities are initiated.  Continuity of Care processes are undertaken.  Upgrades, enhancement, and accessories are managed via marketing and sales campaigns.  Medical supplies (of appropriate) are provided as prescription validation is ensured.
